NEW TESTAMENT PRAYERS
After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.—Matthew 6:9-13.
INTRODUCTION
The Bible is a record of many prayers to God by His people. The first mention is in Genesis:
GENESIS 4:25-26 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. 26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.
It might seem strange that prayer was not known before that time. Perhaps God walked among mankind up until then. It is even uncertain whether prayer began with Seth at the birth of his son or with Enos as an adult. In any regard, prayer has been the way that mankind communicates with God and, through prayer, God is able to discern our hearts[1].
