NEW TESTAMENT PRAYERS
“In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”—Matthew 6:9-13.
INTRODUCTION
The Bible is a record of many prayers to God by His people. The first mention is in Genesis:
GENESIS 4:25-26 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, “For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.” 26 And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the LORD.
It might seem strange that prayer was not known before that time. Perhaps God walked among mankind up until then. It is even uncertain whether prayer began with Seth at the birth of his son or with Enos as an adult. In any regard, prayer has been the way that mankind communicates with God and, through prayer, God is able to discern our hearts[1].
